Cook the turkey, not the garage!

Who doesn’t love a deep-fried turkey? The irresistible flavor and juiciness that results is the absolute best, in my opinion at least. Turkey fryers have the potential to cause fire and it’s important to know how to safely operate the fryer and take precautions to protect yourself, family, guests and your home.

Turkey Frying Safety Tips (not just for Thanksgiving but every day):

Groundwork

  1. When purchasing a fryer, look for one with temperature controls. This is crucial when cooking.
  2. Keep fryers out of garages, off decks, and away from trees and structures.
  3. Always make sure the turkey is completely thawed and blot dry before cooking.
    Ice/water that mixes into the hot oil causes flare-ups.
  4. Make sure the weather is appropriate. Never operate in the rain.
  5. Place the fryer on a level surface and don’t move it once it’s in use.
  6. When using a propane-powered fryer, leave (2) feet between the tank and the burner.
  7. Don’t overfill with oil. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
    Oil can ignite when it contacts the burner.
  8. Choose a smaller turkey, like 8 – 10 pounds max and pass on turkeys over 12.
  9. Don’t stuff the turkey when frying it. Avoid water-based marinades as well.

When In Use

  1. Never leave your fryer unattended, even for a minute.
  2. Keep children and pets away!
  3. Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once your turkey is submerged, turn the burner back on.
  4. Watch the oil temperature carefully. Oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire.
  5. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn off your fryer immediately.

After Your Masterpiece

  1. Turn the burner off and remove your Thanksgiving masterpiece from the oil.
  2. Carefully remove the pot from the burner and place it on a level surface and cover. Let cool overnight before disposing of oil.
