Get ready for this seasons hurricane by using the propane storm preparation tips below. A hurricane can be accompanied by thunderstorms, floods, tornadoes and power outages.
Be Prepared:
Create an emergency preparedness plan and review with everyone living in your home – this plan should include instructions for turning off propane.
Pack a disaster supply kit including clean water, non-perishable food, extra clothing and blankets, flashlights/batteries, and a battery-powered radio.
Be sure there is an adequate supply of fuel in your main tank.
Consider a propane backup generator and be sure it is adequately filled.
Properly secure propane tanks before storms to prevent potentially dangerous situations, this includes large tanks if they haven’t been secured.
When Severe Weather is Imminent:
Turn off the gas supply valve in a clockwise direction at the tank.
Turn off the appliance pilot lights, control valves, and manual shut-off valves.
Remember that propane tanks should NEVER be stored indoors.
Never use outdoor propane appliances or generators indoors or in an enclosed space.
Call J&J Gas Service if:
You smell propane gas.
The propane tank has shifted or moved.
The tank regulator was exposed to water.
The gas lines have pulled away from the tank or if the lines are damaged, bent or broken.
Propane appliances or controls were exposed to water.
If your family evacuates, shut off your propane tank!!! Turn the gas supply valve in a clockwise direction. Once the evacuation is over, call J&J Gas Service to get your gas restored safely.
Thank you for telling me that we should include turning off propane in the emergency procedures that our family should follow in cases of heavy storms. We were informed yesterday by our neighbor that our area is prone to extreme weather conditions and that we should always be prepared no matter what happens. It might be better if we can hire experts beforehand who can check if our tank needs repair or replacement services.
Now that I live on the east coast, I want to be prepared for hurricane season and big storms. You make a good point about having enough propane so you can turn it off during big storms. I’ll be sure to have a lot of propane delivered to my house so I can always be prepared for storms.
