Grilling Safety Tips for Your 4th of July Barbecue

With the 4th of July just over a week away, people across the United States are gearing up to celebrate the 4th of July. For many Americans, the day will be filled with matches and fireworks, burgers and buns, drinks and ice, chips and dip, chairs and blankets and of course – BBQ grills and propane! July 4th is the most popular grilling day of the year with 73% of people using a grill according to a survey by the Hearth, Patio & Barbeque Associate (HPBA).

Don’t forget to follow these 5 grilling safety tips while celebrating Independence Day. Afterall you don’t want any unwanted fireworks:

Always Grill in a Safe Location

Keep your propane barbecue grill outdoors and at least 10’ from your home. Make sure your grill is on a level surface and clear of outdoor furniture, trees and other potential fire hazards.

Inspect Your Connections

Inspect your propane grill hoses and connections before each use. Make sure all fixtures, valves and caps on the cylinder are working and properly tightened.

Follow Appropriate Lighting Procedures

Always keep the grill lid open when lighting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not lean over the grill when lighting. Never use lighter fluid with propane grills.

Always Stay Attentive

Always have one person in charge of the grill at all times. Never leave a hot grill unattended. Never leave children around an unattended or hot grill.

Shut It Down

When your grill is not in use, the grill burners should always be turned off and the cylinder valve closed.
